Through the ages of time people have always understood the importance of having art in their life. From statues standing in town square to more personal works hanging in their home, art is a key factor in society. Not only is art a great way to record the past but, it also can add that personal human touch to any room of the house. Easily turning the empty spots above fireplaces and walls into a focus point of conversation, while sharing your home with friends and family. Whether it’s a painting of old or a new masterpiece, the styles and choices of what fits you and your desired environment are endless. Already have that piece your just absolutely in love with or has been in the family for years? Why not design a room around the art and incorporate everything you like about it into a actual living space. Now the next time you feel like something is missing you will know what, art.
Standing there clothed from head to toe in the latest fall collection, you find yourself wondering what is missing. A slight chill passes over your neck and the answer is clear, you forgot a scarf. Placing your cashmere scarf around your neck, there’s this sense of warmth and completion added to your mood. Not only is your outfit well accented, but you’re more comfortable. Now ask yourself, shouldn’t your home feel the same way? A sanctuary in which you can enjoy all the beauty and elegance in the world surrounded by the hue of the drapes just like the scarf warmly, hugging your neck. Portraying that luxurious and custom feel that you enjoy from your favorite shawl and giving it back into your home. Transforming the almost perfect room into an extension of oneself that lets everyone know your home represents you. So no matter, the gorgeous frame, the finest fabrics find themselves around windows and self. There’s no reason both can’t be exquisite!

Does purple scare you? Most people would say “YES”! Just recently, we had the privilege to make this vision of violet come to life for one of our clients. She could not get enough of this bold yet sophisticated color. If you think “sophisticated” and “purple” don’t belong together, think again. To accomplish this look, we paired
masculine touches that contrasted the often- stereotyped “feminine” color. Metallic silvers and dark finishes were our accents of choice. Bold shapes also added texture and a bit of masculinity. Although the room is not dripping in these finishes, we used them in small areas of high importance. Finally, we finished off the room by contrasting the vintage plum paint used on only one of the walls, combined with a pewter grey tone on all the others. Our client couldn’t be more satisfied with the results quoting, “It’s beautiful…I love it!” It’s safe to say this purple room was a pleaser!
We at DOTIpreviously blogged that Tangerine Tango is Pantone’s 2012 Color of the Year, and that it isn’t going away any time soon, if the Color Association of the United State’s 2013-2014 Color Forecast is any indication. However, this is far from being the only hue on the color trend horizon. But the other colors forecasted by the CAUS are, on the whole, significantly softer and more sensual; in fact the “theme” of the color forecast is – get ready for it – seduction. “Grounded” grays, “cosmic” purples, and “Eden”-like greens are among the selection of up-and-coming colors for 2013 and beyond. Looking at the palette, you can see that gray-based hues are very popular. This gives interiors a subdued sensuality that is obviously popular among architects and designers, and even fits well among the aforementioned 1920s décor trend for furniture and furnishings.
This gorgeous pink and purple are two of my favorite among the forecasted palette. They’re romantic and sophisticated, and provide a great starting point for a seductive color scheme. They are great when judicially paired with each other, with neutrals like the beige swatch below them, or even with one of those “Eden” –like greens mentioned earlier. A living room like this one with these colors and elaborate furnishings is classic, feminine, and beautiful. Not to mention, since these colors aren’t too bright, it’s easier to use several splashes of it within your space, if colored furnishings are more your style. Look at what we found already in our catalogues in these 2013-trendy colors!
What with The Great Gatsby coming out in December and the allure of the more glamorous times of the past, it’s no wonder that 1920’s-inspired fashion, jewelry, and interior design is on the upswing. I know I have an ardent longing for the fabulous parties and unapologetic wealth of the roaring twenties. The 1920’s and subsequent Art Deco movement “look” consisted of elongated shapes (like the feminine silhouette), geometric patterns, metallic embellishments, and an overall subtle extravagance. For inspiration, take a peek at the trailer for the upcoming Gatsby movie, or even the latest runway fashions (as seen above).
If you really like the 20’s look, it’s fairly easy to create a whole space that looks like it’s straight out of the twenties. What’s not to love? It’s traditional, with its rich materials like leather, but yet contemporary at the same time, with its clean lines and geometric shapes, both featured in the above dresser and folding accent screen.
Or if you’re a fan of moderation, Art Deco accents and fabrics are varied and easy-to-incorporate. I love the colors on the middle fabric and the uniqueness of the lamp; both would look perfect in a hallway or bathroom. All these furnishings give your space an exciting and lavish look; it’s no wonder they were called the roaring twenties!
Is a neutral palette too tame for your taste? Then you will love the new 2012 Pantone Color of the Year, 17-143 TCX. And although you may think “Hey! 2012 is almost over; I don’t want an outdated color in my home!”,we at DOTI encourage you to think again – this cheery orange hue isn’t going anywhere. In fact, the Color Association of theUnited States has a few shades of orange listed on their Color Forecast for 2013, many of them are very close to this tangy hue. Tangerine is popular in both interiors as well as fashion because its brings together the vivaciousness and energy of red with the friendliness of yellow. Of course, being a bright color, it cannot be overdone, so doing an entire room in tangerine would probably be a little overwhleming. But as an accesorry, accent, or major focal point, this color is perfect. Make sure to look for he right balance of orange and pink – too pink you get into the corals, and too orange you get into the burnt, fake-tan color territory. If you want to brighten up your kitchen, energize your office or perk up your living room, take a look at these tangerine colored products we found from our vendors for inspiration. Tangerine pairs great with neutrals as well as other bright colors. Try it in something small first to see how you like it…beware, this color will be your new favorite in no time!
Mirror, mirror on the wall – who’s the fairest of them all? You, of course! Mirrors are a great way to add depth and interest to a space. They come in all shapes and sizes: round, square, arched, even squiggly (the mirror on the right kind of looks like Elvis, how cute!). Whether you have a contemporary bedroom or a traditional living room, a mirror can brighten it up instantly.
So you love a mirror but don’t know where to put it? Not to worry, DOTI has a few ideas for you! Hanging it above a sofa arrangement is an obvious solution, but having the mirror lean on a mantel instead is a current popular trend (a more rectangular mirror like the top left one would probably be more suited to this job, though!) Or, if you have a tight hallway, hanging a mirror or two on the walls can instantly widen the space. And what about that half bathroom you’re looking to give a little pizzazz to? Instead of just using the standard rectangular mirror, why not choose one that has a cool frame – like the mirror on the left from Arteriors. Whether you want the mirror to be a focal point or merely an accessory to match the lamps and pillows, DOTI has plenty of ideas and resources to find you the perfect fit.
